NFL veteran running back Jamaal Williams signed a new contract with the New Orleans Saints. Williams, a six-year pro, spent the 2022 season with the Detroit Lions but has also played for the Green Bay Packers.

Williams hits free agency on the heels of the best season of his career. Starting the season as the backup to D’Andre Swift, Williams quickly established himself as the top back in Detroit and played a huge role on a team that surprised a lot of people. Appearing in all 17 games while making nine starts, the former Packer finished the season with 1,066 rushing yards and a league-leading 17 touchdowns on 262 carries (4.1 YPC). Additionally, Williams added another 12 receptions and 73 receiving yards on 16 targets.
Jamaal Williams originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the Green Bay Packers, Williams appeared in all 16 games as a rookie while making seven starts. While on the field, the BYU product finished his inaugural campaign with 556 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 153 carries.
Williams saw similar usage throughout the 2018 season. Splitting touches with a fellow second-year running back in Aaron Jones, Williams finished his sophomore season with 464 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 121 attempts. Over the next two years, Williams’ steadily lost his workload to Aaron Jones. In total, Williams ended his Green Bag career with 500 rushing attempts for 1,985 yards (4.0 YPC) and 10 touchdowns in 60 games.
Entering his age-26 season, Williams signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Lions. Working alongside D’Andre Swift, Williams finished his first season with the Lions by recording 601 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 153 carries. Whose injuries limited him to just 13 games, he remained a key player for that Detroit squad.
Throughout the course of his six-year career, Jamaal Williams has recorded 3,652 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns on 915 attempts (4.0 YPC).
